LECS Program recognized with a $10,000 cash award
At
the CFFK Unsung Heroes luncheon on February 1, Mathew
Helmrich, of the
Community Foundation of the Florida
Keys (CFFK) Grant Award Committee, announced that Last
Stand was being recognized for having the best CFFK
grant-funded project: the 2007 Leadership in
Environmental Conservation and Sustainability (LECS)
project at Key West High School.
The
LECS program, in which Last Stand board members give
classroom lectures, field trips, and hands-on experience
in areas related to environmental sustainability, was
funded by a leadership development grant Last Stand
applied for and was awarded in 2007 by the Community
Foundation.
Among all the projects tackled by local non-profits
receiving CFFK grants, Last Stand's LECS program was
unanimously selected as best in meeting its goals and
objectives by the CFFK Grants Committee.
Initiated in the 2006-2007 school year, the program is
now in its second year.
Last Stand's board of directors will use the cash award
to further our educational programs and to sustain the
LECS program with KWHS teachers Joylyn Smith and Ed
Smith.
We
heartily thank the Community Foundation of the Florida
Keys (link

for the initial grant. We also thank the KWHS faculty
and students who have participated in this exciting
project.
