As this thoughtful letter to the editor of the Key West Citizen (March 15) suggests, "affordable housing" is sometimes just a smokescreen for more development.

Letters to the editor

'Affordable housing' just a catch phrase

Affordable housing is becoming the new "catch word" for unleashed development in Key West. No upright citizen would dare to stop "affordable housing" projects. No person of honor would dare to say that "affordable housing" isn't necessary in Key West.

Now all new construction is labeled "affordable housing." We need affordable housing for our citizens, and while you are at it, sure, build 50 or more million-dollar houses along with the affordable housing. Don't build million-dollar houses to make money. Build affordable housing for the needy of Key West.

Key West doesn't need stoplights for getting out onto Flagler Avenue or onto Truman Avenue or North Roosevelt. So it takes five minutes to get out on the roads without a stoplight. Key West is a small town and doesn't need lights.

We don't need parking spaces, either, because we are a small town. We don't need wider roads, because we are a small town. We don't need parks to improve the quality of living in our community. We don't need recreational facilities for our children. All these projects take money, and who has money?

We need to construct more affordable housing, and by the way, while you are at it, sure, build the million-dollar homes, but only as a side project.

The citizens of Key West have to stand up against this new construction. We are burying ourselves in new construction.

The streets around Key West are turning into the Beltway around Washington, D.C., and it is only going to get worse if the power plant downtown turns into new condos and the Truman Annex property, which we promised the Navy would be turned into a recreational area for the citizens of Key West, turns into new condos. We promise.

If the city wants affordable housing, why not just buy affordable houses and resell them at affordable prices. The catch-word "affordable housing" reminds me of the quote ... a few weeks back. The president was saying, "I'm looking for the person who started the war that I started."
