Gulf of Mexico Oil Debacle
The environmental disaster unfolding in
the Gulf of Mexico from the April 20 explosion, fire, and eventual
sinking of the drilling rig Deepwater Horizon can't really
be described as just "a spill". It's a debacle. And it
confirms the strong objections that we (Last
Stand, countless other environmental groups, and
right-thinking individuals everywhere who care about Planet Earth) have
to increased offshore oil drilling and exploration.
Precisely what the environmental impact
on the Keys will be is not known (or knowable) at this time.
Regardless whether a sheet of oil gets caught up in the Gulf of Mexico
loop current and arrives in the Keys in that particularly damaging form,
or it's "just" a matter of more than the usual quantity of tar-balls
moving past and through Keys waters, the fact remains that a huge amount
of toxic petroleum oil has been added to the Gulf, and to the world's
oceans. If humankind keeps this up, we will kill the world's
oceans and the planet. This is no time for us to get all preachy,
but we can't help saying "we told you so".
The news (and commentary) about the
debacle is being updated more frequently than we could possibly update
our website.
For ongoing updates and information, we
refer you to the Oil Drilling Blog instituted by Craig and DeeVon
Quirolo, the founders of
Reef Relief, at the following address:

And... the following website has been set up to
coordinate volunteer efforts in the Keys:
KeysSpill.com
| Additionally... here's a link to an
official website pertaining to the ongoing situation.
The website is a joint information outlet for the various
agencies and firms (Unified Command) working the emergency.
