Following are two excellent letters-to-editor from the December 24 Keynoter, regarding the Gang of Three's assault on sensible growth, environmental protection, and balanced local government in the Keys.

Keys are for sale to the highest bidders

EDITOR:

So the Monroe County Commission and state Rep. Ken Sorensen want to end the Area of Critical State Concern designation [that gives many local land-use powers to the state]. What else is new?

Critical Concern is the only thing that has prevented total destruction of these fabulous
Florida Keys. The Keys are a national treasure and already have been degraded far beyond anything even imaginable 40 or 50 years ago.

When the real estate and tourist industry stooges who so eagerly serve on county commissions and planning groups finally get their way, this entire chain of islands will be sold off to the highest bidders.

These still-magnificent islands and seas will become just another open sewer, courtesy of the Republican Party and the greedy business people who bankroll it.

This is monumentally disgusting.

Commission, Sorensen show residents no respect

EDITOR:

As I sit in my septic-water-flooded-out home, I offer this holiday message and wishes to our state representative and Monroe County commissioners:

I wish (and hope) state Rep. Ken Sorensen truly does spend all his time and effort removing the county from the Area of Critical State Concern designation. That way, he won't do anything else that looks foolish and we won't have to bother listening to him. When his term is over and we are still safely in an Area of Critical State Concern, we can pray for a much better state representative to take his place.

I wish that Mayor Sonny McCoy would have a few cups of coffee before he goes on the radio and talks about things that he seems to be unaware of and keeps saying “I don't remember” when asked pertinent questions about his actions on the commission.

I wish that Commissioner Dixie Spehar would be more like her predecessor and listen to her constituents and support them instead of behaving the way she has over the past few years and adding to the embarrassing actions of this County Commission.

Of course, many of us wish Commissioner Murray Nelson would stop running busy people around on bus trips that, among other things, show empty lots with gravel. One might also ask that Commissioner Nelson take a refresher course on the different types of environmental organizations.

I do believe many of us wish this group would do the right thing and get up and leave their positions so that we would have a
County Commission and state representative we could be proud of.

All have treated their constituents with disrespect, with arrogance and at times with downright rude embarrassing foolishness. They choose not to listen to those who not only have more experience, but are more knowledgeable than any of them. A shadow commission would do a better job than any of them. Actually, it might be time to consider that because many of their actions taint the meaning of a true County Commission and have delayed much-needed projects for our county.

I recommend anyone else who believes the above is true write in as I have. We need to show the
County Commission has a true vote of no confidence.
