A large proportion of the public believes in recycling and its benefits, and wants our municipal recycling rates to improve.  Monroe County recently announced "single-stream" recycling, meaning that all recyclable materials are hauled out of the Keys together in bulk.  The information below is from Monroe County.

Monroe County Goes Single Stream Recycling

Monroe County Solid Waste Management Department has announced that beginning with the first regularly scheduled recycling collection after July 5, 2009, residents of unincorporated Monroe County, Marathon, Layton, Key Colony and Key Largo can put out at the curb in the same recycling bin:

  • cans
  • plastics (beverage and detergent containers (all plastic containers labeled 1 and 2 only)
  • glass (wine bottles, tea and soda bottles, mayo jars),
  • newspapers
  • magazines
  • mail
  • flattened cardboard
  • soft cover phone books
Also:
  • containers should be rinsed to prevent food/liquid contamination
  • do not tie or bundle paper
  • remove all caps from bottles
This program is known as “Single Stream Recycling”; it is designed to make recycling easier and more cost effective for both residents and the County.

If one recycling bin isn't enough to hold everything, residents can add another container. However, they must make sure it is marked “Recycling” in large bold letters, otherwise it will not be picked up.

Resident participation is very important as Monroe County works to make this program successful. National statistics indicate Single Stream Recycling:

  • Makes recycling easier for residents;
  • Increases consumer recycling;
  • Decreases trash tonnage and disposal costs.

For detailed information on recyclable items included in the single stream program visit the Monroe County Solid Waste Department's web page, or contact Rosa Washington at (305) 292-4432.
